21 Oct Lewis now a professional winner
Amelia Lewis has won dozens of amateur tournaments going back to her junior golf days and through five years of high school golf when she was a three-time Times-Union Player of the Year.
She now has a trophy and a check ($3,000) to show for a tournament.
Lewis won the first time as a professional Wednesday when she shot 70 in the final round and captured a Suncoast Ladies Series event at the Lake Wales Country Club. Lewis was 4-under-par 212 for the tournament, and broke par in each round. She opened 71-71.
Lewis has already experienced success on the professional level. She had a handful of top-10 finishes and ended 19th on the money list for the 2010 LPGA Duramed Futures Tour. That got her an exemption directly to the LPGA qualifying tournament in December, at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach.
If Lewis qualifies for the LPGA, she would be the first native-born First Coast golfer to make the top professional tour for women in the world.
